Interview - Sportball Manager

I’m a big fan of sports management games; even for sports I wouldn’t normally be interested in.  With that in mind I was very interested to see a new game on Kickstarter – Sportball Manager – a sports management sim based on a futuristic and fictional sport.  I was luck enough to speak to the developers of the game – Paralux – and got their thoughts on the game, as well as advice for other indie developers out there.

Q. Tell us all about your game
Sportball Manager is a sports management sim that's based on a futuristic, fictional sport. You take charge of a team from the bottom of the league, build it into a championship contender by acquiring awesome players, and try to stay alive (avoid being fired) for as long as you can.

Each franchise has different bonuses, like leaders from Civilization, and you’ll have to decide what kind of team to build. Do you want to min-max by specializing in small/quick or big/bruising lineups? Or do you want something a bit more balanced?

You’ll build that team through familiar sports concepts: free agency, trades, and an amateur draft. We've put twists on all of those systems to make them more fun (and less like a plain simulation). In the “draft”, you’ll actually be moving scouts across different regions of the world, trying to sign prospects before your opponents. The free agency period is condensed so it’s more strategic and doesn't drag on, and trading is much more straightforward (rather than having a prolonged back-and-forth negotiation.)

Along the way, your players and your franchise level up, and you’ll add new skills and abilities that help you on and off the field.

Watch your team and players earn XP as you play games.
Players Earning XP
By creating a fake sport, we’re able to focus on making the gameplay as fun as possible, rather than being tied to the rules of a “real-life” sport. People can focus on building their teams and watching their players grow into superstars, and not administrating tedious business details.

There’s more info on the systems and gameplay on our Kickstarter page, so if you’re interested, check it out at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paralux/sportball-manager

Q. What inspired you to make the game?
We’re big fans of the genre, and we wanted to make something that focused on what we thought was the fun stuff, as opposed to being hamstrung by having to mimic a real-life sport.

If you think about it, sports are basically the first RPGs people ever created. You have a team of players (your characters) that have to gain skills (level up) in order to win (complete quests.) Along the way you have to overcome challenges, make strategic decisions, and decide on your tactics, as well, in terms of what kind of team you want to have.

Work your way down the culture tree to unlock more powerful abilities and bonuses.
Skill Trees for the Team

By the end, you have a story to tell about how you finally vanquished your nemesis, or, conversely, how your plan was an epic fail. But the best part of sports is that the story isn't linear, it's cyclical. There are always new chapters as teams rise, fall, and then rise again. There's nothing quite like finding an awesome prospect, watching him develop into a superstar, and then having him ride off into the sunset and eventually be inducted into a hall of fame.

Capturing all of that, along with a love of sports, was our inspiration.

Q. How long has the game been in development?
A little over a year.

Q. Have there been any particular highs or lows in development?
Oh yes. There have been plenty of both.

Like a lot of indies, we've been living off savings. I think that means the peaks and the valleys are both magnified. When you have a setback, it can really feel disastrous. And when things are clicking into place, and you feel like you're going to succeed in spite of the difficulties, the temporary relief from that pressure makes everything feel that much better.

One example of a high was when we came up with the idea for the "grace period," which is basically a failure condition. I was really excited. It helped the entire game design fall into place, and that was a big kind of "A-ha!" moment. That lasted a couple days before the grind set back in.

As for a low, there have been a couple times where I thought we had a system design somewhat finalized, only to realize that it wasn't going to work. I think we've redone the culture tree two or three times, trying to find the right structure and progression. That one has been particularly tough, and each time through has been harder, mentally, than before.

Q. Do you have any advice for other indie studios?
  1. Game development is a hard process. It's a journey. Try not to get too high or too low, because swinging between the two can be exhausting.
  2. If you've been slogging away in your office for a long time and feel down, come up for some air to help get re-motivated. Show what you have at the IndieCade East Show-and-Tell. Email other developers. Get feedback on some pre-alpha art or systems. Get active on Twitter. Anything. My impulse was to keep my head down and try to work as hard as possible, because there was always so much to do, but I think mixing it up would have ultimately been much better.
  3. Start doing your community building at least 6 months in advance of whatever launch you have planned (Kickstarter, straight to a full release, a Greenlight campaign, etc.)

I think that's the single most important thing I can recommend. I've heard developers regret design decisions, launch decisions, rushed planning, etc. I've never, ever heard a developer say they spent TOO much time on community building and getting a bunch of followers.

There are a lot of people and sites in the indie scene that promote first-pass art, rough screenshots, and things like that. Use them. Talk to people. Build interest. Get as many fans as you can. People will start to follow you, and you can build up from there.

Q. What are your plans for the future?
In the immediate future, we'll be on Twitch.tv at PAX East on Sunday from 11:45-12:00 to talk about the game. I'm really looking forward to that.

For longer-term plans, realistically, we just have to see how our Kickstarter and Greenlight campaigns go, along with our launch. Those are such big variables that it's hard to know what our next step will be. We've talked about potential DLC and have a backlog of features we'd love to add, so if there's enough demand we'd love to go down that path. If not, we might try our hand at another game entirely, we might try to bring Sportball Manager, as it is, to iOS, or we might have to go back into the corporate world to rebuild our savings, and try this again later. The future is wide open.

That's both exhilarating and a bit scary.

Early Access Thursday

Only 3 new games this week:

Ascent - The Space Game by Fluffy Kitten StudiosAscent is a Player Versus Environment space MMO with 270,000,000,000 star systems and an emphasis on strong Sci Fi, exploration, colonization, starbase construction, research and technology, mining and farming, trading, and of course combat.

Price - £14.99

My Opinion -
A new space MMO with emphasis on PvE.  I used to play a lot of Eve and games like Freelancer back in the day; if this can recereate any of that magic I think I'll give it a go.

Steam Link

Game Website

BloodLust Shadowhunter by WRF StudiosBloodLust is a present-day Dungeon Crawler where players will journey into the depths of darkness searching for a great evil, while struggling to decide whether to destroy or embrace their Kindred family.

Price - £9.99

My Opinion -
A Vampire themed dungeon crawler...works for me!  Looks really good and the feedback has been positive so far.

Gunscape by Blowfish StudiosInspired by the first-person shooters of the past that we loved, we're taking all the most memorable elements and putting them in a toolkit to be used and combined however you want. At its heart, Gunscape is an FPS construction kit. It's a game that lets you go wild with your creativity in a pumping action sandbox! Gunscape does this by providing easy-to-use tools based on a block-placement interface everybody's already familiar with to create single-player campaigns, co-op maps and multiplayer arenas and the functionality to share your creations with your friends. Don't like building stuff and just want to blast your way through hordes of monsters or duel with other players? Maps can also be shared, played and voted on by the whole world, so you'll always have new levels at your fingertips!

Price - Free

My Opinion -
A free-to-play game that is a cross between a proper FPS and Minecraft.  Worth look, if nothing else because it is free.

Greenlight Wednesday

Adopted
Adopted is a 3D, single-player exploration game where you play as Luchador, a recently rescued Boston Terrier thrust into a world of complex human problems with only a few simple tools to solve them. Players will sniff to discover important clues and then bark, chew, and fetch to manipulate their humans to make smart choices, or not.

My Opinion - Ever wanted to play as a family dog? If not, why not?!  Seriously though, these guys have produced a really interesting game that deserves to get greenlit.  They also have a kickstarter campaign on.

Game Website

Falling Stars: War of Empires
Falling Stars: War of Empires is a turn-based strategy game where players vie for control of the galaxy through politics, space warfare, exploration, and more. Falling Stars: War of Empires contains a mix of traditional turn-based strategy mechanics, and "Euro" mechanics, to bring you fast-paced yet in-depth matches that can be finished in one sitting. Our goal is to create an game where every decision you make has a large impact on the outcome of the game. Whether it be position your fleet to form a chokehold on another player, or deciding to barter with planetary inhabitant or conquer them, every decision matters.

My Opinion - A sci-fi turn-based strategy with the aim to allow players to finish in one sitting.  Now I like games that go on for multiple days but this is a really nice idea to have a in-depth strategy game that you can finish quite quickly.  They are also on kickstarter at the moment.

Light Fall
Light Fall is an immersive 2D platformer with its own twist on the genre. With its beautiful art style, its intriguing storyline and its unique game mechanic in the Shadow Core, Light Fall offers a fresh and addictive platforming experience.

My Opinion - Another beautiful 2d platformer - there's a lot of them around at the moment but there could always be more!

Slain!
Players control Bathoryn, a hero in a Gothic world, seeking to liberate seven great towers.
Bathoryn must battle his way through a doomed land packed with gruesome pixel art foes before ascending (or sometimes descending) each tower, defeating puzzles, traps and monsters alike. At the heart of each tower, he must confront a mighty overlord. Defeat it and Bathoryn’s quest continues. Fail, and you’ll die gruesomely - mauled by werewolves, disintegrated by floating monstrosities, squashed by great weights or torn apart by hidden blades. And you will fail.....

My Opinion - A side-scrolling brutal fighting game in a fantasy world.  I can imagine these being a lot of fun in 30 minute bursts.  Also on Kickstarter at the moment.

Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?!
Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! is a wacky simulation game where you manage your very own weapon shop and expand its business across an incredible potato world. Use your potato smiths to forge weapons and sell them to questing heroes. You will meet more than 70 potato heroes, forge more than 200 weapons, expand your business into 20 wacky areas, manage 30 zany potato smiths, discover 10 legendary pop culture heroes . . . and even adopt a potato dog!

My Opinion - Last but by no means least is this little gem where you potato smiths forge and sell weapons.  A perfectly normal concept (!) but one that looks really well executed.

Kickstarter Tuesday

A very tricky selection this week but I've tried to give a balanced and varied Top 5 - hope you enjoy.

Sportball Manager by Paralux
Lead your team to a championship in the future's awesomest sport. Sports management sim meets strategy/RPG gameplay, for PC/Mac.

Funding Goal - $15,000 by Thursday 26th March

My Opinion - I love Sports Management Games and it is nice to see an original concept for such a game with futuristic setting and a 'made up' sport.  What I really like about it is the RPG element of it where you unlock new skills and tactics along the way.  If you like Sports Management Games with a bucket load of stats, this one is for you.

Wave of Darkness by by Aurofinity and Dreamatrix
Hack'n RPG for PC: crafting system, spell generator, sacrifices, gods, exploration and endless slashing and looting.

Funding Goal - $20,00 by Thursday 2nd April

My Opinion - Wave of Darkness follows on from the excellent Legends of Dawn (also funded from Kickstarter).  If you like fantasy RPGs, you can't go wrong with this, especially if you liked Legends of Dawn, or even similar games in the genre such as Diablo.

Don't be Patchman by Naturally Intelligent
Help Patchman rescue the Sheeple from enslavement by the Drone army! A pixel-art action/adventure game for PC, Mac, Linux.

Funding Goal - $25,000 (Canadian) by Thursday 26th March

My Opinion - A highly original pixel adventure that looks like a lot of fun.  Check out the video for a full explanation of the plot - putting in to words here is going to be impossible.

Nephil's Fall by Exordium Games
A fantasy metroidvania platformer with unique mechanics telling an epic story about a fallen guardian in a corrupted world.

Funding Goal - $30,000 by Wednesday 1st April

My Opinion - A great story told in an interesting way and with a major twist on the normal platformer - for a start you travel from right to left!  I love the main character as well; it looks like a Warforged from Eberron (geeky D&D reference).

Detective Di: The Silk Rose Murders by Nupixo Games
Play as the legendary detective Di Renjie and follow the trail of a serial killer in the heart of ancient China.

Funding Goal - $16,000 (Canadian) by Friday 27th March

My Opinion - There aren't enough detective games out there that aren't just the hidden item genre.  This is highly original with a nice art style, good story and interesting gameplay.  Back this if you want to see a highly original game come to life.

Featured Game - Mini Racing Adventures

Today we are featuring the excellent Mini Racing Adventures by Minimo Studios; a fun and challenging side scrolling physics based 3D racer for iOS & Android that is currently in a Kickstarter Campaign.  This looks like a great way to spend a commute or play for 30 minutes on an evening.  I spoke to the Team at Minimo about the game and its development.

Q. Tell us all about Mini Racing Adventures
Mini Racing Adventures is the first game we plan to launch, it's a 3D side-scrolling racing game. The game is a physic based racer where you have to break your limits to reach the furthest point throughout each level with your selected vehicles navigating through bumpy terrains. You also have the option to race vs your best time, our ghost mode. An overlapped image of your previously recorded best time vs you live. We also offer a time challenge vs the CPU which is quite the challenge to beat. We feel it's a fun game with some colourful art and packed with personality. We hope this game will bring as much enjoyment to others as it has to us throughout our development of it.

Q. What inspired you to make the game?
We love all things automotive, and we found a lack of games with the kind of world, features, and originality, which we would love to play. Actually there are other off-road games out there, but we also wanted to make one with our own style. So we brashly decided to make this game to fulfil what we would like to see and fill in what was missing from the genre.

Brings back happy memories of Micro Machines V3

Q. How long has the game been in development?
It's hard to pinpoint the exact time of development for this game, because we were also interrupted by business affairs, real life events, and other things as well. If we put all the time together we can safely say it's taken us 6 months to get where we are now.

 A precarious looking jump...

Q. Have there been any particular highs or lows in development?
Since we are not a big studio, we are having trouble in human resources, as we do most of the work by ourselves. The workplace and equipment for development is also a problem for us, as we don't have the proper studio to work out of. We can only work from home and borrow office space from friends and family for so long! The highs are that we don't have a strict schedule of working hours and rules like in companies we've all worked for before. Even sometimes we have to work until we meet the next morning. And we are proud by having our own product as indie studio.

By anyone's standards, this looks awesome

Q. Do you have any advice for other indie studios?
We don't have a success story in the real world yet, so we're not sure if our advice is credible enough!. But, we can say to others to keep struggling on your product, even when your spirits are down. Just keep your head up and keep on creating, that’s the key. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel; you will hear appreciation from people regarding your efforts. And keep in contact with any people you meet as a studio, they may have opportunities that are worth to try.

Will MRA be a winner?

Q. What are your plans for the future?
We will develop this game further depending on the budget we have. We also have other games developed in parallel and we have a lot of ideas to work on in the future such as steam-punk mecha theme, classic platformers, casual battleship, and simple casual games as well.
