Featured Game of the Week - Tiny Robot Justice Squad

Recently I caught up with Jay Young, creator of Tiny Robot Justice Squad, our top Greenlight game from a couple of weeks ago.  I spoke to him about the game, as well as why he has taken the interesting route of being a Community-Interest-Company and donating any money he makes to GamesAid.

Q. Tell us all about Tiny Robot Justice Squad

A. It's a 2D side-scrolling arena shooter, and an unrepentant, straight-forward blaster set in a future that, to me, is what would come out if Terry Pratchett and Isaac Asimov sat down and wrote a short story. As you might expect, you battle against waves of enemies who have the sole aim of ruining your day. Your goal is to destroy them, obviously, but you also need to destroy certain static targets (called Signal Pods) that spawn alongside them. These control how many enemies spawn each wave, and you need to destroy them to move through to the next part of the level. Enemies themselves come in various shapes and sizes, with different abilities and weaknesses. Luckily you've got a bunch of guns and special abilities to use against them!

The levels are split up into a bunch of different arenas or rooms that you progress through, like in SmashTV, and these can also contain boss fights as well as traps and things. It's 100% hand-crafted, no procedural generation, randomisation or anything like that.

Q. What inspired you to make the game?

A. I've wanted to make a colourful blaster for a while now. I really enjoyed playing Risk of Rain last year, and I think that really inspired me to finally sit down and start prototyping some stuff. I really enjoyed how each enemy seemed to have a unique attack pattern. Before that I'd played Rogue Legacy as well, and I really enjoyed how you never really knew what you were going to get when you moved on to the next room. I kind of wanted to mix those elements up with the straightforward arcade fun of games I used to play in arcades. Remember arcades? They were brill.

Q. How long have you been working on it?

A. Since around July 2014, which is when I roughly started making prototypes, working out how things would look and experimenting with different engines to see which one I got along with the best. Art was the biggest struggle and time sink, since I have no background in it, and really need to muddle my way through. Even today I'm still improving stuff and learning how to draw things better.

Q. When might it be released?

A. I'm firmly pencilling in a release date mid-way through this year. Summer-ish. I work alone, and I think there's another 6 months of work left to do or so. But I don't feel time pressure -- it's done when it's done. I want to make a game that's fun and that stands up on its own merits, no matter how long it takes.

Q. Why did you choose the Community Interest Company route?

A. So, game development is a sideline for me. It's one I take quite seriously, but it's still a sideline. In the big scary real world, I'm an academic, I just finished my PhD in Artificial Intelligence and I have a job as a research fellow on a big EU Robotics project. That's sort of set-in-stone now, so I don't need to make a living from games development. At some point I started taking development of the game more seriously, and it stopped being a toy prototype. I had the idea to donate any profits to charity while talking with some friends about how I might commercialise the game. I thought it would be nice to finally put what skills I have to some good use!

Really, it was the only choice. A CIC is a special kind of company that commercialises its output for public good. It's important since it means I have an obligation to make sure that the money goes to the right place, so there's a guarantee there. It means people can trust the funds are not going into someone's back pocket! I plan to be totally open with all the finances, stats and sales, as things progress, so other people can learn from the data.

First and foremost though, my goal is to make cool video games. I really want my games to stand on their own, and be judged based on their merits. I considered not mentioning the CIC portion of the project at all, but I decided to be open about it in the end.

Q. Why have chosen to give your profits to GamesAid?

A. They are an excellent organisation with great connections to the games industry. The way they work is that they serve as a central fund-raising body which distributes funds to other charities. I was familiar with them before, so they seemed like the logical choice. They've given me some great support lately too!

Q. Do you have any advice for other Indie developers?

A. Yeah. If you're just starting out, two things: Master "Good Enough" -- if you're coming from a CS/Software Engineering background like myself, you'll likely be tempted to over-engineer your games, searching for nice, clean elegant solutions. In reality, this can be very time consuming, and 99% of the time makes no difference to the end user. Simpler solutions that take half the time to implement are key. Second, don't underestimate how difficult it is to get and manage press coverage, so start building up contacts and a following immediately. It's hard!

Q. Do you have any plans for future games?

A. Yes, I have a whole second design document full of ideas. Some are mobile projects, some are console projects. I'm not worrying about them right now, but at some point after this project is finished, I'll look towards prototyping a few. After I've played through all the video games I've missed out on since starting this project!

Early Access Thursday

A small flurry of new Early Access titles on Steam this week - here are my top 5:

TOXIKK by Reakktor Studios
FRAG LIKE IT'S 1999! TOXIKK plays as if today's military shooters never existed. The game combines the simple and intuitive mechanics of old-school FPS giants with a fresh setting, slick graphics and our vision to carefully evolve the genre with some new ideas elaborated with Arena-FPS enthusiasts.

Price - £12.59 or £39.99 for a 4-pack

My Opinion - A good looking FPS that has game-play that is a throwback to shooters of the past (in a good way).  It particularly reminds me of the good old days of Unreal Tournament that I spent a lot of my teenage years playing.  I think this might be the first FPS I will buy for a long time.

Stranded Deep by Beam Team Games
Take the role of a plane crash survivor stranded somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Experience terrifying encounters both above and below an endless environment. Come face to face with some of the most life threatening scenarios that will result in a different experience each time you play.

Scavenge. Discover. Survive.

Price - £10.99

My Opinion - There are a lot of survival games out there but I love the idea of trying to survive on your own on an island.  Most importantly, there are no zombies! Reviews have been very positive already.

Woolfe - The Red Hood Diaries by GRIN
Woolfe - The Red Hood Diaries is a cinematic fable featuring a vengeful Red Riding Hood. All grown up, cried out and armed with an axe, our heroine embarks on an odyssey to avenge the death of her parents. Buckle up for a surprising take on the Red Riding Hood tale as you know it, some good old-fashioned action platforming, fun combo-based hack ‘n slash combat and rewarding environment puzzles exploring the attractive fantasy universe.

Price - £6.99

My Opinion - This game looks beautiful and it the story is well written.  For the price, this is definitely worth a look.

Armello by League of Geeks
Armello is a swashbuckling adventure that combines the strategic play of card and board games with RPG elements.

As a hero from one of the clans of Armello, you'll quest, scheme, explore, vanquish monsters, and face off against other players, with one ultimate end goal in mind — storming the palace and becoming King or Queen of Armello.

Price - £18.99

My Opinion - an interesting combination of board game, TCG, strategy and RPG. The artwork looks nice and the game-play complex enough to satisfy strategy buffs.

Perfect Golf by Perfect Parallel
PerfectGolf is a next generation, indie developed, single player, multiplayer golf game. Built with the Unity Engine, Perfect Golf provides a truly immersive experience centered on stunning visuals and hyper-realistic game play. The game will have practice, single player, and multiplayer game modes where you will be able to use our 'in-game' lobby and matchmaking system to go head to head.

Price - £14.99

My Opinion - This looks like potentially the best golf game ever - of course you will probably have to like golf in the first place to enjoy this.  The idea of content being community-driven is potentially exciting and could give it legs for the future.

Greenlight Wednesday

Lots of competition this week on Greenlight, meaning it was very difficult to choose a Top5 but here we go:

Little Big Mansion by Krisjet Game Design
"Little Big Mansion is a shortform videogame about the complicated relationship between two magicians with opposite powers. They embark on a quest together to explore an old mansion, but quickly find themselves unable to cooperate. It was originally conceived as a game jam prototype in 2013, and has since then become a full-fledged adventure."

My Opinion - Great concept, interesting gameplay and a good pixel design.  If you like games that make you think, this is one for you.

VHS Story by Gamejam
"VHS Story (Video Hero Super Story) is a strategy / tycoon / streetfighter-manager game with 80-90s atmosphere, nostalgia and lots of games/movies references."

My Opinion - This game looks like a lot of fun and is a pretty original concept.  Check out their greenlight page for the trailers to get a better idea of what this is all about.

Albert and Otto
"Albert & Otto is a story about a boy and a magical bunny who journey together and solve puzzles in order to get back what was taken from them. Albert and Otto work together to overcome challenges thrown their way. We soon learn however that what seemed at first like a journey to save the damsel in distress is anything but and that our hero Albert might be hiding something dark."

My Opinion - This looks fantastic and after playing the demo (available in the links below) has a great atmosphere. I'll be buying this when it's released.

Trackday Manager by Arctic Hazard
"Trackday Manager is a 3D simulation/manager multiplayer game where you are in charge of managing a racing team. You are not the driver but the team chief. You control your driver during races by issuing commands through several options while monitoring the race carefully in beautiful 3D surroundings. Your goal is to guide your driver and team to victory."

My Opinion - I'm a sucker for games like this but I'm usually disappointed by the final product (except for Motorsport Manager on the iPhone).  This looks like it might fulfil expectations though and I look forward to giving it a spin when it's released.

Greenlight Link

Threshold by QuadaTron
"Threshold is a puzzle platformer game where you play as the cute little gnomish wizard, known only as Hood, return home by solving the mysteries of magical, but treacherously unstable, lands. All is not as it seems, however, as depending on which direction Hood faces, the world changes to present different challenges."

My Opinion - The third platformer on the list this week but again, it looks great and like a lot of fun so I couldn't pass up on it.  The particular highlight of Threshold is the beautiful backdrops.

Tuesday 27 January 2015

Kickstarter Tuesday

Top 5 Kickstarter's of this week are:

Orphan by Windy Hill Studios
"Orphan is a classically styled 2D action platformer where a young boy is a survivor of an overnight alien invasion."

Funding Goal - $32,000 by Tuesday 3rd March

My Opinion - A great story, fantastic atmosphere and beautiful backdrops; this game is worth checking out.

Children of Morta by Dead Mage
"Children of Morta is a story-driven hack ‘n slash roguelike game which will involve you in the adventures of the Bergson family."

Funding Goal - $65,000 by Thursday 19th February

My Opinion - A rogue-like 2d pixel game with a detailed and interesting backstory.  This already been backed really strongly and I'll be adding to that and looking forward to it's release.

Nova Blitz by Dragon Foundry
"The NovaBlitz real-time TCG features blazing fast game play, deep strategy, and huge cash prize tournaments!"

Funding Goal - $80,000 by Friday 20th February

My Opinion - A colourful and fun-looking trading card game.  Check out the demo (link on Kickstarter page) for an initial impression - it impressed me.

Starr Mazer by Imagos Softworks
"A retro-sexy Point-and-Click Adventure Shoot 'em Up in SPACE!"

Funding Goal - $160,000 by Saturday 21st February

My Opinion - Point-and-click, side scrolling shooter and a detailed story.  This looks like a space-opera epic that should be a lot of fun when finished.

STRAFE® by Pixel Titans
"The future of video games: the fastest, bloodiest, deadliest, most adjective-abusing, action-packed first-person shooter of 1996."

Funding Goal - $185,096 by Thursday 19th February

My Opinion - A loud and brash old-skool shooter.  I grew up playing Wolfenstein and Doom - this fits the bill perfectly if I need to scratch that itch again.

Monday Recap

When I remember, on Monday's I'll be doing a quick recap of games we've previously had as featured game of the week.

Mad Games Tycoon by Eggcode

Develop your own game concepts, create a team and develop million-selling video games.
Research new technologies, train your staff and buy larger office buildings.
Expand your business and dominate the world's market for video games!"

Current Status - currently at 0.150121A with changes and bug fixes being made on a fairly consistent basis.  It is worth noting that it is very playable at the moment and worth supporting if you like these types of games.

Vidar by Dean Razavi
"A despairing RPG-Puzzler set in a town on the brink. Random storytelling. Random puzzles. Constant loss."

Current Status - as of 26th January, it is $4,086 towards a final target of $18,000 on Kickstarter.  It needs to reach the target by Friday 27th February.  If you haven't already, check it out and give the demo a go via the link below.

Curse of Mermos
"Curse of Mermos is a lighthearted hack and slash game with fast paced action and challenging combat. Special game modifiers allow players to customize each playthrough."

Current Status - the completed game is available via their website for free.  It still needs your support though to get Greenlit.

Friday 23 January 2015

Featured Game of the Week

This week’s featured game is Curse of Mermos, a free game developed as a student project by Team 101.

Why I have chosen it
It’s fun, quirky and looks good.  Also I think the fact it is a student project should be promoted, particularly as the game is actually really good.

Summary of the game
The game starts with an explanation of the main elements of gameplay – combat, strafing and souls, as well as the controls.

You then see your character have a short conversation with Ebo, who is a mummy trapped in this tomb, cursed by Mermos.  He tells you to kill all the monsters in the tomb to help free him.

The game then descends in to fighting off waves of monsters with either your melee or ranged attacks.  Every monster you kill gives you souls which you can use to improve your character over time.

Although a simple enough game to play, I found it very challenging the first time through to stay alive!  Mind you, that’s probably just because I suck…

Despite me being awful at the game, it is really good fun and I highly recommend everyone to check this out.  Download links are further below.

Other things to note
  • Cool Egyptian music
  • Controller recommended

Strengths
Simple and good fun – reminds me of a simpler version of Torchlight
It is free!
Very good atmosphere

Weaknesses
Harder than I expected
Combat is very simple

Current State and Availability - This game has been developed as a student project and is already available for free on Indie DB and Itch.

Early Access Thursday

Hi all - 4 new early access games this week, including a remake of one of my favourite games of all time.  First up though is is Infinifactory.

Infinifactory by Zachtronics
"Infinifactory is a sandbox puzzle game by Zachtronics, the creators of SpaceChem and Infiniminer. Build factories that assemble products for your alien overlords, and try not to die in the process."

Price - £17.09 until 26th January, after that it is £18.99

My Opinion - This game looks and sounds really cool.  The reviews so far have been very positive and I think it might be a classic once it is fully finished.

Steam Link

CaesarIA by rdt.32
"CaesarIA is a remake of an old-school economic strategy game, Caesar III which is a masterpiece among the games of this genre in our opinion. There are different economic strategy games and they can be broken down to subtypes but from our viewpoint Caesar encompasses planning, constructing, diplomacy and military campaigns."

Price - Free!

My Opinion - I love the old Caesar series and Caesar III is one of my favourite games of all-time, in fact I still play it now.  I'm really pleased the remake is happening and this looks like a promising start.  Still very early access at the moment but if you like city-building games or played any of the old series in the past, give this a go.

H1Z1 by Sony Online Entertainment
"Enter a world that has been overrun by zombies and fellow survivors since the H1Z1 virus outbreak. Fight for your life against the infected and against the brutality of others as you attempt to live and see another day. Every moment is borrowed time with one question to answer… Will You Survive?"

Price - £14.99 for standard edition, £29.99 for Special Edition (this includes some extra items)

My Opinion - Another Zombie survival game.  Reviews have been mixed so far but the negative ones tend to more about technical issues (queuing to get in the game) than anything gameplay related.  Might end up being the next big thing in survival games if they listen to players feedback properly during this early access phase.

Ratz Instagib by Lino Slahuschek
"Tired of bloated, overly-complex FPS games? Fancy getting addicted to something that's fast, frantic and full of blasting fun? Then Ratz Instagib is exactly what you need!

Inspired by the classic Instagib mode of Unreal Tournament fame, Ratz Instagib takes the concept of arena-based FPS gaming and renders it down to its core essentials: namely, blasting your friends into tiny pieces with high-powered weaponry. Players take control of a railgun-toting rat in household-themed arenas, with every shot being a potential kill – no more shooting opponents repeatedly to little effect or suffering cheap deaths at the hands of people with an unfair advantage. It's every rat for themselves on an even playing field!"

Price - £6.99, £14.99 for a 4-pack

My Opinion - a brightly coloured FPS with some imaginative arenas.  If you like the classic FPS' like Quake and Unreal Tournament but want something a little bit less serious, this might be for you.

Greenlight Wednesday

Tough decisions to make in choosing this week's Top 5 Steam Greenlight games but here they are:

Tiny Robot Justice Squad by Mind Relay
"Tiny Robot Justice Squad is a 2D action platformer/arena shooter for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux platforms. It has explosions, big guns, big bosses and quick-paced platform gameplay. The game is being developed by Mind Relay (which is actually just one person!), with all proceeds generated by the game to be donated to the charity GamesAid which helps disabled and disadvantaged young people. Carry on reading to learn more about the game and how it will support good causes!"

My Opinion - the game looks like a good old-fashioned action platformer this is quirky, funny and most importantly, looks like a lot of fine.  Also it is worth noting that any money the game makes will go to the charity GamesAid (link).

Ralin - Dwarf Wars by Ogardonix Studios
"The set of this epic game are the Dwarven Halls, smoothly lightened in the warm glow of the fire torches. Explore them and discover the scenery that takes place in the middle of War - Goblins vs Dwarfs. The player´s role is a dwarf who sacrifices his life to protect the treasures of his dwarf clan, mined with their sweat and blood. Hack and Slay the wicked thieves who nastily sneaked into the dwarf halls and steal the precious treasures. The gameplay is a combat with hand to hand weapons. The dwarves are picking up their hammer and protect what is precious to them. They do not appreciate the Goblin intrusion!"

My Opinion - I like dwarfs and I like hack and slash games; this gets my vote! Seriously though this looks really well done and when finished should be a lot of fun.  Just to note, this has already been greenlit but is still worth checking out.

RetroBlazer by Hydra Game Works
"RetroBlazer is an FPS that features elements prevalent in 2D games with a focus on classic running-and-gunning gameplay. You are challenged by a wide variety of enemies and empowered by a collection of unique weapons. And when firepower isn’t enough, you must rely on your wits to survive the ruins of an once utopian world."

My Opinion - A brightly coloured fast-paced shooter that looks like a lot of fun.  Check out the demo on their website for an idea of what lies in store.

Curse of Mermos by Team 101
"Curse of Mermos is a lighthearted hack and slash game with fast paced action and challenging combat. Players wield the Hammer of Horus or shoot the Crossbow of Neith to defeat hordes of monsters in the tomb of Ebo. The game features unlockable abilities and skill upgrades for personalized combat. Special game modifiers allow players to customize each playthrough."

My Opinion - This game looks well polished and like an even more light-hearted version of Torchlight.  This game has been developed as a student project and is already available for free on Indie DB and Itch.

Pneuma: Breath of Life by Deco Digital
"Pneuma: Breath of Life is an enthralling first person puzzler putting gamers’ minds to the test in a visually stunning world using the power of Unreal Engine 4. Pneuma provides players with a sense of awe and a relentless determination to solve every puzzle and progress through a narrated story of self-discovery, exploring the fundamental nature of being. This is the first person puzzler of 2015 which is designed to force players think outside the box and explore beyond what they know as reality."

My Opinion - This game reminds of Myst and other atmospheric puzzle games.  I'm looking forward to trying this once it is released on Steam or otherwise.

My Opinion - My favourite kickstarter of the week.  The game looks like it is a lot of fun and has a good sense of humour.

Moonman by Ben Porter
"A magic mollusc summons a moonman to illuminate a dark world. A procedurally-generated adventure game for PC, Mac and Linux."

Funding Goal - $35,000 (Australian) by Thursday 12th February

Shadowrun: Hong Kong by HareBrained Schemes LLC
"A Shadowrun cyberpunk cRPG set in 2056's Magically Awakened Hong Kong by the developers of Shadowrun Returns & Dragonfall."

Funding Goal - $100,000 by Tuesday 17th February.  The project has already reached $500,000 with the final stretch goal (currently) at $700,000

My Opinion - If you like any of the previous Shadowrun games then this is a no-brainer to support.  What does this for me though, is the Cyberpunk and Asian settings that look like a great combination.

Steel Assault by Sri Kankanahalli
"Years after the U.S. falls, the world is on the brink of war once more. A 2D action platformer for PC, in the style of a late NES game."

Funding Goal - $8,000 by Thursday 19th February

My Opinion - Looks like a good side-scrolling action game.  I grew up with games like this so happy to back a new one, particularly one that looks as fun as this.

Terra Incognito RPG by Dan Steer
"Terra is a nostalgia inducing, retro inspired role playing game with 16-bit, 90's style graphics! Explore the vast world of Terra!"

Funding Goal - £500 by Friday 13th February

My Opinion - A well thought-through 2D RPG.  Loving the D&D feel to this. Worth checking out.

Friday 16 January 2015

Featured Game of the Week

Featured game this week is Vidar by Dean Razavi
"A despairing RPG-Puzzler set in a town on the brink. Random storytelling. Random puzzles. Constant loss."

Why I have chosen it
To me this looks like a unique take on an RPG and for that reason alone it is worth featuring this week.  I am a big fan of RPGs, from Final Fantasy to Baldur’s Gate and Skyrim, but this game gives an interesting twist to the genre that could make it a cult favourite when it comes out.

Summary of the game
To note – this feature is based on the demo version that I have played.

The game starts off with a nicely voiced introduction that sets the scene for events to come.  After that you are informed that three people have been killed off in the village and then you enter a snowy world.

Once you enter you are advised to explore and talk to the local residents.  After wandering around and speaking to a few I’m given a couple of quests to explore the local ice caves.

Upon entering the caves, I’m told I’ve got 7 minutes to complete the puzzle!  The puzzles can be difficult if you are an idiot (like me) but once you figure it out it isn’t too difficult.

Depending on whether you complete the quest(s) in the ice caves you get a nice summary of what  would have happened if you could continue playing.

Other things to mention:
  • The music is very atmospheric and adds to the melancholy feel of the game
  • Books available to read give a real depth to the world
  • Objects you can interact with are helpfully signposted

If you get the chance, check out the demo.  On the strength of it, I will help fund it on Kickstarter.

Strengths
  • Atmosphere
  • Music
  • Unique setting

Weaknesses
Not fair to comment yet as the game is only in early stages

Current state and availability
As noted there is a demo available and the link is further below.  The game is also in a Kickstarter campaign with the developer looking for $18,000 by Friday 27th February.  Currently release looks like for March 2016.

Thursday 15 January 2015

Early Access Thursday

Three new early access titles to showcase this week:

The Mims Beginning by Squatting Penguins
"Experience the mysterious and mystical by taking on a journey with Mims in this strategic god-like video game. Create structures, plant vegetation, breed animals, take care of your minions, use divine PSI powers, triumph in face of natural disasters, fight monsters, predict the future, reveal secrets and so much more. Assume the lead over Mims as they journey across the galaxy in their epic quest!"

Price - £12.74 (UK) - offer ends January 21st, £14,99 (UK) after

My Opinion - A god game that reminds me of Populous and Giant: Citizen Kabuto, but potentially with even more humour.  It has been a while since I've seen a good god game, hopefully this fits the bill.

JumpJet Rex by TreeFortress Games
"Remember when platformers were so tough that people would hurt their hands playing, but feel amazing after getting past a level? Relive those moments with JumpJet Rex’s strenuous platforming challenges and retro boss battles."

Price - £5.94 (UK) - offer ends January 21st, £6,99 (UK) after

My Opinion - a retro-looking platformer with a space-faring dinosaur, what more needs to be said?! Seriously though, if you like the original Sonic games or early 90s platformers, this is for you.

Steam Link

GRAV by BitMonster Inc
GRAV is a sand box experience where you explore a multitude of planets, hunt strange alien creatures, build and defend outposts, craft weapons and armor, and attempt to survive against other players in a hostile environment.

Price - £10.49 (UK) - offer ends January 21st, £14,99 (UK) after

My Opinion - a huge and gorgeous looking sci-fi MMO.  It has a lot of competition in this genre but it looks good and has some unique selling points that should stand it in good stead for the future.  If you like MMOs and / or survival games, check it out.

Greenlight Wednesday

Happy Wednesday all! Here is my run down of the top 5 Steam Greenlight games from the last 7 days.

Vernon's Legacy by TripleBrick
"...is an unusual exploration game with distinct horror elements and a captivating storyline.
You are playing as Robert, the new owner of the Dungenhof mansion.
When exploring your new property you quickly realize that something has changed here since you last visited. Something is not right."

My Opinion - this game looks beautiful and very atmospheric, with a good back-story as well.  Worth voting for to hopefully see on steam in the future.

Angels Fall First by AFF Dev Team
"Angels Fall First is a truly first person sci-fi war game.

From commanding the battle standing on the bridge of your flagship all the way down to serious infantry firefighting - with everything in between - AFF brings together all the war you ever loved.

Featuring team-based gameplay, and offering a wide selection of weapons and tools, ground vehicles and spacecraft, AFF includes Full bot support. This means you can co-op versus AI, play entirely offline, or earn glory in full PVP matches."

My Opinion - imagine Battlefield in space, with the ability to fly spaceships...works for me!  Looking forward to this being released.

Caribbean Odyssey by Game Indica
"Caribbean Odyssey is the first instalment of a long tale that tells a compelling & epic story of the legendary character, Captain Henry Morgan."

My Opinion - looks like a really interesting pirate adventure game.  It looks pretty unique to me and well worth keeping an eye out for in the future.  In the meantime check it out and give it a vote.

Voidrunner
"This is the Void... Forever and never, alive and dead...
Voidrunner is a speed & reflex flying game made in stunning Unreal Engine 4. Targeted for PC/Console systems, expected to be completed on late 2015.
The basic gameplay is about racing through the environment and head for the exit portal before time runs out. Enemies, turrets and the environment itself will try to prevent your progress and it's up to your flying skills to advance through the Void."

My Opinion - looks really good with fantastic visuals.  Also nice to see a game of this type focussed on a different type of gameplay, i.e. running instead of fighting.

Jack Toresal and The Secret Letter by Textfyre
"Set in the town of Toresal in the kingdom of Miradania, Secret Letter is an adventure about a fourteen year old orphan that everyone knows as "Jack". Jack is pulled into a dangerous mystery when a handful of Baron Fossville's mercenaries begin hunting him. From Grubber's Market through Commerce Street, and onto Lord's Keep; Jack is faced with numerous challenges. Teisha lends a hand along the way, as does Bobby, the mysterious boy always lurking in Lord's Market. The ladies at Maiden House are helpful, but can sometimes be a bit overbearing. The shopkeepers are always willing to chat about the latest gossip. Jack, he just wants to sit down and eat an apple."

My Opinion - already available on the company website but they are hoping to bring it to steam as well.  I love interactive fiction and this looks like a great example of it.

Kickstarter Tuesday

Welcome back for another instalment of Kickstarter Tuesday with my top 5 picks of the week;

Vidar by Dean Razavi
"A despairing RPG-Puzzler set in a town on the brink. Random storytelling. Random puzzles. Constant loss."

Funding Goal - $18,000 by Friday 27th February

My Opinion - This looks like a really interesting and unique take on the RPG and one that I will be backing.  Check out the demo to find out for yourself.

Lacuna by Harry Roper
"Colonise the universe and rebuild the lost colonies. Destroy your opposition or try out other methods..only you can decide."

Funding Goal - £6,600 by Wednesday 11th February

My Opinion - a very interesting looking 2D Sci-fi game.  Looks like it has a lot of features already with the Kickstarter campaign to make it even better.

Drift Stage by Super Systems Softworks
"Drift Stage is a modern take on the classic arcade racer."

Funding Goal - already funded

My Opinion - an old-school looking arcade racer but done with a lot of style.  Check out the Kickstarer page for lots of information, as well as the demo which lets you try a time trial.

Astonia Reborn by Trent Wilson
"Astonia Reborn is a fantasy MMORPG with a character building system unlike any other, full of pvp, pve, 2.5D isometric. Simply Unique."

Funding Goal - $2,000 (New Zealand) by Friday 6th February

My Opinion - a small MMORPG that is already live but looking for funding to improve the game.  Reminds me of the old Ultima games, but in a very good way.

No Turning Back by ColloseusX
"No Turning Back is a Pixel Art Action-Adventure Roguelike Video Game"

Funding Goal - £5,000 by Wednesday 11th February

My Opinion - an old-school rogue like game that plays really well already on the demo.  If you are a fan of the genre, go check it out.

Friday Feature

My first featured game of the week is Mad Games Tycoon (MGT) by Eggcode.
Form your own game studio in the early 80s in a small garage.
Develop your own game concepts, create a team and develop million-selling video games.
Research new technologies, train your staff and buy larger office buildings.
Expand your business and dominate the world's market for video games!

Why I Have Chosen It
It was a close run thing with Into the Stars but I eventually went with MGT as I’ve bought the early access version and have been very impressed with it.  I’m a big fan of game development games and have played Game Dev Story and Game Dev Tycoon, both of which have sent the benchmark.  From the looks of it, Mad Games Tycoon has raised the bar that bit higher and will even better once finished.

Summary
The game starts off with you choosing your company name, logo, etc and then plunges you straight in to the game at your HQ.

The HQ is essentially a blank sheet of paper where you can create various rooms to develop games, train staff and market your games.  The amount of rooms available is vast, as are the customisation options for each room.  You can add different types of desk, cabinets and accessories such as plants and vending machines.  Figuring out what to put where can take a while and it is important to use your space as wisely as possible.  You do have the option to upgrade the size of your HQ as you earn more money.

To the main point of the Mad Games Tycoon: developing games.  As with other similar titles you have limited options when first developing your game but with all of them you choose: topic, genre (and the later option of a sub-genre), game engine, platform, focus (graphics, sound, gameplay and technology), languages to sell it in and finally features.  Once a game is made you get a review and choose a publisher.  The variations on all of the above are endless and gives a strong re-playability value to the game.  I found myself keeping playing to try new combinations and see if they worked.

Other features worth mentioning include:
  • Research – the amount of research you can do is staggering, with lots of options for new topics, features and genres
  • Engine – you can either buy a game engine or develop your own
  • Licenses – you have the option to buy licenses to develop games based on books and movies

There is a lot to recommend the game already, despite the early stage of development it is in.  I think that the possibilities for the game in the future are very promising and I would encourage any fans of the genre to check this out.

Current state
As of the 8th January the state was 0.150108A and from the early looks of it, they are updating and fixing bugs on a regular basis.

Strengths
Endless combinations

Weaknesses
In the current state, the main problem is a lack of a tutorial or any help.  You are essentially shooting in the dark through trial and error.  This can be fun but also frustrating.  I’m sure this will be something they solve in later versions.

Availability
£10.99 on Steam
$14.99 from the developer website
